Bill Blass All Weather Coat

wcd70s29900billblasstr_5d43

Bill Blass buttery cream lined in navy blue all weather trench coat with matching tie sash belt. Wide pointed lapels and collar. The sleeves are to the wrists and have a turned back cuff. Two angled welt pockets. "Like most people who seem to be most typically New York, Bill Blass comes from Indiana," wrote native Midwesterner Eleanor Lambert in an early press release for Blass when he worked at Maurice Rentner. Blass reigns as an American classic, the man who abidingly exemplifies high style because his work plays on the sharp edge of glamor but never falls into the abyss of indecency. Likewise, it defines sophisticated style because it has elements of the naive and the crude in impeccable balance. Blass is the perfect example of fashion's deconstructivist internal oppositions of real, hyper-glamour, and style synthesis.

Giorgio Sant'Angelo Cashmere Set

wcd70s31265santangelo02

Giorgio Sant'Angelo chocolate brown cashmere sweater with split skirt. The sweater top is v-neckline with embroidered flowers decorating the front, shoulders and across the upper back. Outlining the neckline, hem and sleeve hem is gold thread woven into he cashmere. The sides of the sweater are slit up five inches. The pants are in the Gaucho style band have an elastic waistband. Inspired by hippie and street fashions, Sant'Angelo also translated ideas that would fit the marketplace. His love of ethnic clothing was evident, and his gypsy looks included elements of romanticism. Introducing a modern component, he incorporated Lycra body suits with these varied influences. He offered women a chance at self-expression through dress. In 1972 Sant'Angelo left behind his gypsy and Native American inspirations and concentrated on body-conscious designs combining knits and wovens. His 33-piece collection was shown at the Guggenheim Museum and further emphasized Sant'Angelo's commitment to fashion design as an artform. "To me, soul means freedom and inner confidence" Sant'Angelo commented on the collection. "I express it in happy, bright colors, and in simplicity of design." He presented matching knit shirts, tops, trousers, and bras that folded into an envelope for travel. These pieces were based around a body stocking and formed the 1970s American fashion silhouette.

I've been designing clothes since the late 1960s. I always try to remind myself that I am dressing a woman's soul as well as her body. Souls and bodies do best when they are relaxed, fluid, and comfortable. They love to play "dress-up." They love a good laugh as well as perfect quiet and softness. I hope my clothes reflect a woman's soul.

Many students are torn between the glamour of stage or film design and high fashion. Holly Harp was able to merge both her love of costume and fashion into a successful professional career that lasted more than 25 years. Harp went with an early instinct after designing sandals on a whim, and returned to college with her sights set on becoming a designer. She studied in the theatre department and worked on her fashion degree. Her style was dramatic, feminine, and refined. Harp moved to the West Coast during the height of hippie-doom in 1966. San Francisco hippies tended to borrow street styles and recycle clothing salvaged from the local Goodwill, while Los Angeles, where Harp set up shop, was more interested in marketing styles and trends in the form of new designs. The latter was more of a "rich hippie" look. Harp was inspired by the youthful street fashions and was referred to by the Los Angeles Times as the city's "doyenne of feathers and fringe." Her rock star clients had included Janis Joplin and Grace Slick, who loved Harp's wonderful batiks, feathers, and hand-dyed fabrics. Harp's clothes suited the tastes of the youthful population who loved psychedelic colors and melodramatic effects.

It was more than being in the right place at the right time. Harp began to distill her designs into her own personal expression. During the 1970s there was more emphasis on the body. The soft matte jersey Harp experimented with became a signature fabric along with chiffon. There was a continuation of using beadwork, flowers, feathers, and airbrushed designs but with a softer, refined touch. Harp used complicated draping techniques to emphasize feminine qualities rather than the prevailing minimal approach. Answers.com
