Triana-Norell

c. 1950s Lovely deep blue silk satin dinner dress is two-pieces. The bodice is a halter swimsuit styled fitted bodice with an attached flair peplum. The narrow halter strap snaps at the center front. The bust is a shaped and pleated bra style. A center front inner weight to maintain the center front dip at the decolletage. The bodice closes with a center back zipper. The peplum skirt of the top is lined with an heavy ply rayon for shape and form. The skirt is built in two sections with the top section at the fitted waist down through the hips is fits close to the body. The very full skirt is joined to the waist yoke at the seam line. On the inside of the skirt is a band of black horsehair to add the skirt in maintaining it’s fullness from top to bottom hem. The satin at use here is a heavy gauge fabric that was necessary to maintain the shape and form of the dress. Beautiful fabric and attention to detail make this a very good early example of this team’s work. A. Traina was Anthony Traina. Traina was a manufacturer of quality women's fashions, not a designer. In the 1920s Germaine Monteil designed for the company. The company became Traina-Norell in 1941 when designer Norman Norell became his design partner. Simple, well-made clothes that would last and remain fashionable for many years became the hallmark of Norman Norell, the first American designer to win the respect of Parisian couturiers. He gained a reputation for flattering design while Traina, whose well-heeled clientele appreciated the snob appeal of pared-down day clothes and dramatic eveningwear. Philip Hulitar

C. Late 50s to early 60s This incredible black silk brocade dress clearly shows Philip Hulitar's ability to create an amazing silhouette that has the ability to show off a women's figure with dramatic flair. The fabric's pattern is an inverted flower such as a Bleeding Heart. The very fitted bodice has these incredible wings that appear to literally take flight from the front of the shoulders. The shoulder straps are attached beneath the wings to the front and are one with the top back. Short runs of encased elastic help the shoulder straps maintain their position. The back is a deep v-line. The front bodice has a deeply incised v-line. A pleat is taken at the center front bust-line to create a shelf for the bosom further enhancing a women's shape. The bodice and skirt join a the natural waistline. The narrow skirt has pleats taken right and left of center front. The zipper is set on the left side and runs all the way up and across the underarm of the short sleeve to the sleeves hem. After I photoed the dress I noticed that at one time a swing tack held the center front "v" together a bit, I have no way of knowing at this stage how long the tack was so I am not restoring that tack. Also the owner used a brooch at the bottom on the "v" and there are a couple of pricks in the fabric that are barely visible. A very beautiful dress and worthy of a higher than average collection. Mr. Hulitar was noted for his designs of sophisticated cocktail dresses and evening gowns. His work was featured in the United States collection shown at the World's Fair in Brussels in 1958. "The star of a gifted designer has risen recently on the fashion horizon," The New York Times reported after he opened his own firm in 1949. He specialized in cocktail and evening clothes. In 1959 the New York times wrote, "Dedicated to making beautiful women more beautiful, Women who want to show off good figures should let Mr. Hulitar help them." His clothes are both sexy and romantic. Bio Source- New York Fashion & VFG

Pauline Trigere

C.1950s Wonderful black wool-ribbed-dress from Pauline Trigere with original matching belt with mother-of-pearl belt buckle. Square neckline edged with black lace and fitted through the bodice. The back-zipper is offset, to the right, from center back and gently curves across the back bodice. The skirt is slightly belled with 2-inch wide pleats that are set right and left of center front and center back. The skirt is backed with black silk organza and lined with black slip-nylon. The black leather of the belt has split in a couple of places and I would try to have a cobbler replace the leather since her name is printed on the backside of the belt on the backing. There are little slit pockets hidden with in the folds from the pleats.

c. 1950s A wonderful early Galanos black silk brocade dinner dress with a dropped waistline. Open neckline with a deep v-line in front and high at the center back. Center back metal zipper. The dress is fitted through the just below the waist where the very full skirt joins the dress. The full gathered skirt is set with cartage pleating, see photo. The attached petticoat is a layered tiered box pleated black muslin. This petticoat provides volume and shape for the skirt. Beautifully constructed with a meticulous attention to detail. Dedication to excellence, in craftsmanship and design, was the foundation of James Galanos' career. The quality of workmanship found in his clothing is unsurpassed in America today. It may seem a contradiction that his sophisticated, mature, and elegant clothing was designed and produced in southern California, traditionally the land of sportswear. But Galanos was satisfied to remain where he began his business in 1951, a continent away from New York and the center of the American fashion industry. Bio Source- Answer.com

Born in France, worked in couture houses in Paris after World War II. He realized many of his clients were wealthy Americans and opened up a couture salon in New York City as well. It is unclear whether he operated two salons, one in Paris and one in New York City, or if he primarily worked in NYC and worked with seamstresses and textile designers in France. Nevertheless, by the mid-1950s his couture salon was in full swing, providing fashions for some of America's wealthiest women including Mrs. Firestone, and a little later, Jacqueline Kennedy. Bob Bugnand's fashions are very rich and dramatic, often including fine embroidery and beadwork on what is really a fairly simple silhouette.
