His work became popular among New York high-society women. In 1970 Blass became owner of Rentner, which he renamed after himself. He was a pioneer in employing the business strategy of licensing his designs and name to a huge array of fashion accessories. Bio Source-Answers.com

Bill Blass

c.1980s Bill Blass red, white & navy three piece set. The wool gabardine skirt is red white and navy with a drop yoke and box pleats. The sleeveless shell is horizontally striped in red white and navy and is a lycra based fabric. The tailored wool gabardine jacket is white with brass disk buttons on sleeves and closing center front. Center front panels in navy center back panels in red, Glove length sleeves. Like most people who seem to be most typically New York, Bill Blass comes from Indiana," wrote native Midwesterner Eleanor Lambert in an early press release for Blass when he worked at Maurice Rentner. Blass reigns as an American classic, the man who abidingly exemplifies high style because his work plays on the sharp edge of glamor but never falls into the abyss of indecency. Likewise, it defines sophisticated style because it has elements of the naive and the crude in impeccable balance. Blass is the perfect example of fashion's deconstructivist internal oppositions of real, hyper-glamor, and style synthesis. BIO SOURCE: ANSWERS.COM

Bill Blass

c.1980s Bill Blass red linen dress with frog and toggle closures down the center front. The dress also has hidden snaps. The closing of the dress is slightly off-set to the left and curves to meet the side seam creating a deep pocket below the left hip. Fully lined with red cotton. Blass evolved into a superb licensing genius and dean of American fashion designers. His is an intensely pictorial imagination, one that conjures up the most romantic possibilities of fashion. He maintains an ideal of glamor and personal aura, redolent of socialites and stars of screen and stage. Yet though there is little in Blass' work that is truly unique to him and not practiced by any other designer, one would never mistake a Blass for a Mainbocher or a Schiaparelli nor for any of his contemporaries. Cerruti Black Strapless Dress w/Long Train

wcdtqi2000s236cerruti08

Cerruti black linen mini strapless dress with a long crinkle crepe train that drapes from the top edge of the back to the floor. The train is black muslin with a double layer and tuffs of matching muslin applied on top. The top line of the bust has a gripper strip to help the dress stay in place. Nino Cerruti was born in 1930, as the son of one of the founders. In 1950, he became head of the family woolen business. Drawing from his experience in producing excellent fabrics, Cerruti ventured into the production of clothing in the late 60s. His first men's collection was shown in 1967 and was considered a revolution in men's wear at the time. The first boutique opened in 1967 on Rue Royale in Paris, where Cerruti moved the head of the business to, in order to be closer to the international fashion capital. The fabric production under the name of Lanificio Cerruti remained in Italy, while the fashion house is called Cerruti 1881. In 1976 Cerruti added a women's line to the successful men's wear business. Today, the firm is known for its classic wool suits, always trying to match the everyday challenges for its owner. In Spring 1996, the young talent Narcisso Rodriguez became head of design at Cerruti. Appointing young and promising names for the design position of well-established brands, seems to be en vogue in the fashion business since the outstanding success which Tom Ford created for Gucci. But surprisingly, Rodriguez was replaced in mid-1997 by the Greek-American Peter Speliopoulos, who worked for Donna Karan before.

Gianni Versace black leather and jersey evening gown. The gown has a low draped neckline. The leather covers the back of the dress and wraps around to the far right front side. The leather, on the back of the dress, is set and sewn into large patchwork blocks. The jersey is straight seamed down the left side seam and then swag draped across the front of the dress where it meets the leather and is joined in a seam line down to the mid-thigh where the split begins. The dress is fully lined in black silk. The shoulders are different, on the right side the leather is used in a rolled manner around the underarm up onto and over the shoulder for the strap. On the left side the jersey joins the back leather in a simple shoulder. There is no zipper in this dress it is wiggle in and wiggle out. One of the most innovative fashion designers of the 20th century, Gianni Versace (1946-1997) startled the world with his clothes made from metal, plastic, and leather, and delighted ballet and opera lovers with his stunning theatrical costumes. Versace socialized with celebrities, who loved and wore his expensive clothing. The world was shocked when the designer was murdered outside his Florida mansion in 1997. In 1979, Versace, who was always greatly concerned with his image, began a collaboration with the American photographer Richard Avedon. In 1982, Versace won the first of a series of awards, "L'Occhio d'Oro," (Golden Eye) for the best fashion designer of the 1982-83 fall/winter collection for women. In this collection he displayed his famous metal garments, now a classic feature of his fashion. His metal mesh dress was inspired by the punk fashions he saw in London in 1980. To develop the mesh material, Versace worked with German engineers. In later collections, metal dresses were made in bright colors. In the 1980s, Versace introduced another technological innovation, the bonding of leather to rubber using lasers.

Givenchy wool navy blue suit with a navy blue and green plaid skirt and accents on the jacket. The simple navy blue jacket has patch pockets and is lined in the blue and green plaid wool that matches the little gathered skirt. The skirt is fully lined. Because of the emphasis on line rather than decoration, Givenchy's designs were easy to adapt, endearing him to the many American manufacturers who interpreted them. Givenchy himself helped to make his clothes accessible to a much wider market in the early prelicensing years, designing junior sportswear to be made by American manufacturers with American fabrics, for Seventeen and Glamour magazines. The caption for Glamour ' December 1955 cover, featuring a Givenchy sweater, spoke directly to the appeal of his designs: "The Givenchy marks young chic...meant for long, lean people in pipe stem skirts...for when they want to look casual in a worldly way."

Gucci Red Silk Blouse

wcd80s29677guccireds_1ddff3

Gucci red print silk blouse. The print is a floral plaid in black and two tones of red. The neckline is high with a wrap around sash tie. The buttons are off-set across the left shoulder. Sleeves are full with wide cuffs with matching black buttons. The House of Gucci was founded in 1921 by Guccio Gucci. In 1938, Gucci expanded and a boutique was opened in Rome. Guccio was responsible for designing many of the company's products. In 1947, Gucci introduced the bamboo handle handbag, which is still a company mainstay. During the 1950s, Gucci also developed the trademark striped webbing, which was derived from the saddle girth, and the suede moccasin with a metal horsebit. His wife Aida Calvelli had a large family, though only the sons—Vasco, Aldo, Ugo, and Rodolfo—would play a role in leading the company. After Guccio's death in 1953, Aldo helped lead the company to a position of International prominence, opening the company’s first boutique in New York. Even in Gucci’s fledgling years, the family was notorious for its ferocious infighting. Disputes regarding inheritances, stock holdings, and day-to-day operations of the stores often divided the family and led to alliances. Gucci expanded overseas, board meetings about the company’s future often ended with tempers flaring and luggage and purses flying. Gucci targeted the Far East for further expansion in the late 1960s, opening stores in Hong Kong and Tokyo. At that time, the company also developed its famous GG logo (Guccio Gucci's initials), the Flora silk scarf (worn prominently by Hollywood actress Grace Kelly), and the Jackie O shoulder bag, made famous by Jackie Kennedy, the wife of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.

Guy Laroche Red, Yellow & Black Dress

A matching belt passes through a bunched knot and closes at the center back. Center back zipper. Larouche opened his own couture house in 1956 on Avenue Franklin Roosevelt in Paris, at the age of 37. His first collection, shown in his apartment, was one of subtle sophistication, reminiscent of Balenciaga's restrained elegance: simple tops that spread into huge bouffant skirts with baroque inspired, twisted drapes, or relaxed short evening dresses in black silk chiffon, with elegant capes bordered in satin ribbon. Later collections were more feminine, fun, and younger in feel: short puffed hems and schoolgirl dresses or delicate gathered drapes and scallop-effect necklines. Guy Laroche clothes were particularly noted for their skillful cutting and tailoring.

Norma Kamali Black Silk Evening Gown

wcd90s29649kamiliblksilk01

Norma Kamali black silk jacquard evening gown. The gown ha thin shoulder straps. The front of the bodice is slip cut and the back has an athletic cut, very narrow center back panel. The gown is shaped to the body with body darts and then flairs out towards the bottom with a very 30s feel. Norma Kamali grew up on the upper east-side of Manhattan, New York. As a child, Kamali was interested in becoming a painter to express her inner self. Later, the rather shy Kamali found another way to express herself: experimenting with unique fabric combinations in her dress. From 1961 to 1964 Kamali attended the Fashion Institute of Technology where she received her bachelor’s in fashion illustration. After college, Kamali worked for one year as a freelance fashion illustrator. Because she wanted to travel to gain a broader exposure to fashion, she worked as a clerk for Northwest Orient Airlines from 1966 to 1967. In 1967 Kamali decided to launch her own business, Kamali Fashion Imports, for which she designed and imported garments sold out of her basement. One of Kamali’s first designs, t-shirts with rhinestone studs, snakeskin, appliqués, or leather, received recognition in several magazine editorials which generated a large volume of consumer demand. In 1974 Kamali relocated her business to Madison Avenue where she continued to create unique designs with innovative fabrics and silhouettes. She designed a line of parachute clothing from real silk parachutes and developed a coat from a sleeping bag that is now part of the costume collection at the Metropolitan Museum. The recognition she received from these collections also provided her with the opportunity to create original costumes for the Emerald City in Sydney Lumet’s film The Wiz (1978). Kamali’s experimentation with swimwear fabric in 1978 resulted in the “pull bikini,â€ a revealing, drawstring, two-piece suit. The suit was modeled by Christie Brinkley for the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine. The pull bikini received international recognition and pushed Kamali to the forefront of the swimwear business. The increase in demand for her designs led Kamali to open a second operation, OMO (On My Own), in 1978 on West 56th Street. Kamali introduced her first ready-to-wear collection in 1981, a fleece-based collection of sweatshirts embellished with interesting decorative details. This collection, licensed to Jones Apparel Group, was her first venture into licensing. In 1982 she signed another licensing agreement with Renown to distribute her designs in Japan and the Orient. This new expansion allowed Kamali to open world headquarters in 1983 on West 56th Street with administrative offices, a showroom, and a design studio.

Oleg Cassini Black Sequin Dress

wcd80s29358olegcassi_1ddf8a

Oleg Cassini black sequin evening dress with a plunging back. The neckline is a slight scoop and the shoulders are et with large shoulder pads. The sleeves reach to just below the elbow. The sequins are set on a dress of black stretch jersey. In 1950 the designer opened Oleg Cassini Inc., his ready-to-wear dress firm in New York, with $100,000-worth of backing. Femininity quickly became the keyword in describing his work; he produced dresses made from soft, romantic fabrics like lace, taffeta, and chiffon. He popularized ladylike fashion innovations, such as the A-line, the smart little white-collared dress, the sheath, the knitted suit, and dresses with minute waistlines. Military details such as brass buttons and braid were also popular features. In the 1960s the Cassini look evolved to incorporate ease and simplicity. The straight, lined cocktail and evening dresses popularized by Jackie Kennedy were customer favorites, as were his plain, boxy jacket suits. Retiring from his ready-to-wear and couture business in 1963, Cassini's next venture was a ready-to-wear business in partnership with his brother Igor. He presented a menswear collection for the first time, breaking tradition by introducing color to shirts that had always been white, and teaming them with traditional three-piece suits.

Poi by Kriza

c.1980s Poi by Kriza navy blue cotton structured blouse with multiply rows of narrow elastic around the waistline. Small standing collar and center front buttons and two large patch breast pockets. Established in 1954 by husband and wife team Aldo Pinto and Mariuccia Mandelli, the company and label Krizia was named after a Plato treatise on vanity. Taking the name to heart, Mariuccia Mandelli, the designer behind the label developed a style and look worthy of its ancient origin. Classical and experimental at the same time, Krizia has been the choice of the fashion elite since the company's inception. Mariuccia Mandelli is a master of "contradictions" using opposing sides to create a design. But instead of chaos, she brings order to opposing ideas. The result is - a magnificent design, perfect in its simplicity of execution.

Saint Laurent Numbered Couture

wcld80s27650ysl01

c. 1980s Saint Laurent number couture red linen jacket with red snakeskin belt. The belt loops on the jacket match the belt. Saint Laurent has created a unique style that for decades has been synonymous of the most refined and modern elegance. He was the first, in the 60s to understand that haute couture could take its inspiration from the street, not limiting itself to be a closed world without any relation with everyday life. His first collection for Christian Dior in 1958, after his mentor's death, was a big sensation. In the elegant rooms of Avenue Montaigne, he introduced a gritty and irreverent new look, very nonpolitically correct for the formality of the period. It was already possible to sense the originality of the new designer, who, during all his career, has been a constant innovator, a modernizer of the female image. Decades before Giorgio Armani he had the intuition to glamorize for women some items taken from the male wardrobe, such as the blazer, the tuxedo, the pant suit, the leather jacket. His devouring passion for art has enabled him to create clothes inspired by Picasso, Matisse, Braque, David Hockney, Mondrian, etc. in a time when coupling art with fashion was not yet an abused idea as it is today. Again, much in advance on others, he was the first to enrich his collections with ethnic and folk elements coming from Africa, Spain, Morocco, Russia and China. His enduring love for the theatre and for literature, Marcel Proust being his tutelary deity, have also been transposed into his clothes. Bio Source-Wikipedia.org

Ungaro Blouse

wcld80s27697ungaro01

1980s Ungaro silk blouse with a mushrooms and flower print in pinks and reds and green. The front of the blouse drapes right over left and creates a deeply cut v-shape at center front. The shoulders are set wide and flow into the long narrow sleeves. Ungaro's designs have been intended to convey sex appeal without being vulgar. He has said that when doing a dress he would always ask himself if the woman in the dress would be seductive. Women and music are his inspiration. One can only guess if a particular collection has been created while Ungaro was listening to Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, Stravinsky, or Ravel. Certainly his designs possess the contrast and harmony, repose and counterpoint of a musical composition. By the mid-1980s an Ungaro dress could be immediately identified by its diagonally draped and shirred skirt, wide shoulders gathered into gigot sleeves buttoned at the wrist, wrapped V-neckline, or jewel-toned silk jacquard fabric. Valentino Plaid Blouse & Coat

"Valentino red, black and tan wool plaid coat and matching silk blouse. The blouse has a zipper front closure that opens tot eh mid-way point on the bodice. Four patch pockets accent this sporty blouse. This ensemble is very Hepburn to me. The open matching wool plaid coat has no closures and is after the 30s style of coats. In 1960, Valentino established his own salon on the fashionable Via Condotti in Rome. Two years later he did his first ready-to-wear collection. He also showed his collection at the Pitti Palace in Florence in the same year, a move which led to greater exposure and set him as a major Italian designer. ""Creativity, said Valentino, ""is difficult to explain, it is like an internal force, an enthusiasm that never wanes and gives me the strength to continue working in new ways. As I look at things and people in the street, my imagination continues to march and my ideas take shape through my pencil"". His volcanic flow of new ideas for women and refined elegance left its indelible mark in the jet set. Valentino's work is grand and dramatic. This makes his designs perfect as wedding dresses, including those of Jackie Kennedy to Aristotle Onassis (from the 1968 White collection) and Elizabeth Taylor in 1991 ( her eighth marriage!). Over the years, Valentino has added various ready-to-wear lines, including ones for men, children, the home, and young adults, called Oliver. This line was named for one of his pug dogs. His labels and designs often have his trademark V incorporated in them, and there is a special shade of red that is associated with Valentino."

"The word 'fashion' would not exist if there were no copying," Costa said in the Baltimore Jewish Times in the fall of 1989. "The mirroring of the highest standard has been the basis of our society from Day One. There's a Rolls Royce, a Tiffany, a Beluga caviar" and there's a customer who knows and wants what is considered the ultimate. It takes talent to look at the world and see what is in the wind for his customer so that she always looks pretty and feels provoked to buy." Victor Costa quote from answers.com
